Rural Spending on the Rise: Key Points from the Consumption Survey

  • New Data: The Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) 2022-23 reveals a surprising trend - average monthly spending in rural areas (₹3,773) is growing faster compared to urban areas (₹6,459).
  • Growth Gap: While both rural and urban spending have increased significantly since 2011-12, rural spending has grown at a faster pace (164%) compared to urban spending (146%).
  • Narrowing Gap: This trend signifies a narrowing gap between rural and urban consumption, with the disparity dropping from 1.8 times to 1.7 times in the same period.
  • Shifting Priorities: The survey also highlights a shift in spending patterns, with the share of food expenditure decreasing in both areas. Rural and urban households now allocate 46% and 39% of their budgets to food, respectively, compared to 53% and 42.6% in 2011-12.
