Google Backtracks on App Removals After Talks with Indian Government

  • Over 100 Indian apps, including those from Matrimony.com, were removed from Google Play Store.
  • Reason for removal: Non-compliance with Google's policy requiring a service fee for in-app purchases not using Google Play Billing.
  • Following discussions with the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), Google agreed to restore the deleted apps.
  • This is a temporary solution, with both parties aiming to find a long-term agreement in the coming months.
  • The restored apps will reflect their status as of March 1, 2024.
  • This move comes after criticism from Indian startups and government officials regarding the app removals.
