GPU Tsunami: India Supercharges AI Ambitions with 34,000+ GPUs, Picks 3 Startups to Build Desi Foundation Models

  • India has shattered its own records by making over 34,000 GPUs available for AI research and development, marking a massive leap in compute power for startups, researchers, and innovators.

  • The Ministry of Electronics & IT announced the addition of nearly 16,000 GPUs to the national pool, bringing the total to 34,333 units—one of the largest public AI compute infrastructures outside the tech giants.

  • This expanded GPU cloud will power the next wave of AI breakthroughs, giving Indian innovators access to high-performance resources at government-subsidized rates, slashing costs by up to 40% compared to global benchmarks.

  • In a bold move to fuel homegrown AI, three new startups—Soket AI, Gnani AI, and Gan AI—have been selected under the IndiaAI Mission to build indigenous foundation models tailored to India’s unique needs.

  • Soket AI will develop an open-source 120-billion parameter model optimized for India’s linguistic diversity, targeting sectors like defense, healthcare, and education.

  • Gan AI is set to create a 70-billion parameter multilingual model aimed at delivering “superhuman” text-to-speech capabilities, with ambitions to surpass global leaders.

  • Gnani AI will focus on a 14-billion parameter Voice AI model, delivering real-time, multilingual speech processing with advanced reasoning.

  • These selections follow the earlier pick of Sarvam AI, which is building India’s first sovereign large language model ecosystem.

  • The government’s vision is clear: democratize AI, reverse brain drain, and build a complete, inclusive ecosystem that puts India at the forefront of global AI innovation.

  • With this GPU surge and a new generation of foundation models in the works, India is sending a strong message—it’s not just catching up in the AI race, it’s aiming to lead.
